Learning how to use Godot
2025-08-07
Almost exactly one year ago, I started trying to develop a game called IOTA, about a Robot who
punches people, in a similar style to Punch-Out!!. I downloaded Godot, and without really looking
into good coding practices, or understanding the concept of placeholders and making sure I like
the artstyle I chose, I started making a little demo. It didn't go anywhere, and I stopped very soon after starting.
BUT NOW, almost 3 years since I first had the idea for this game, I'm actually DOING it. It's an odd
feeling to actually be working on this thing now. I can finally change the About Me page.
With that, here's this week's Devlog.
Starting with the beginning of the clip, the world exploring section is looking and feeling better. Some
people have asked me if the game itself it called Aquarium, or IOTA because of the title of Last Week's
video. The GAME is IOTA, and the LOCATION is Aquarium. Textboxes are now nice and clean looking, although I still don't
know how to make them close out into MORE textboxes so that characters can speak in more than 3 sentence utterances.
As well, DECISION Textboxes exist now. You would not believe me if I told you how long that took.
Now the big one: the fight section! This is obviously a really big deal to me because the game now has (a very basic version of) both
major gameplay parts: world exploring, and Punch-Out. I've implemented Character Control, interaction with the Enemy (Cyber Squid, in this case),
and a very rudimentary Health Bar. I'm currently using a Sprite Sheet my friend Sean made me, who's also a little test NPC I put in the
World Exploring test.
I'm really weirdly motivated to keep working on this, so check back here every Thursday for more updates. I'll probably make the
Devlogs unlisted on my YouTube at some point, so You'll have to come HERE to see them... I don't want to flood my YouTube wall with a bunch of
Devlogs for a game people don't care about.
